Torre Dei Beati

The name of the estate is drawn from a detail of a big fresco dating back to the 14th century, in the Santa Maria church of Piano. In the representation of the Day of Judgment, the Tower of the Blessed (“Torre dei Beati”) is the final goal the souls strive to achieve through diligence and work. This ancient story is reflected in the culture of the Torre dei Beati winery. Here, through diligence and extremely careful work in the vineyard and at the winery, the Torre Dei Beati bring out the best from the native grapes they grow.

Located in the celebrated Loreto Aprutino area, Fausto and Adriana started their family-operated winemaking activity in 1999. They commenced cultivating the vineyards that were gifted to them by Adriana’s father, Rocco who had planted them decades earlier in 1972. Both Fausto Albanesi and Adriana Galassi have been members of the Italian Sommelier Society since 1992.

Their first bottling was in 2000. In 2002 their organic farming practices got the organic certification complying with the CE 2092/91 European law regarding organic agriculture. This was done because of their beliefs that to be high quality, wines should also be natural without the use of chemicals.

The vines are spaced at 2.5 mt/ 8 ft square, the foliage develops parallel to the ground at a height of 1.8 mt/ 6 ft. Those in favor of the system maintain that the foliage prevents excess sun on the grapes, and helps reduce the evaporation of water from the ground. Having said that, as vineyards are replanted at Torre Dei Beati, they are now being trained low to the ground in the Spurred Cordon system. The management of the vines reflects the characteristics of the variety and the specific nature of the land on which it grows.

The family began winemaking on the ground floor of the old farmhouse in the center of the vineyard. Now a new cellar and additional parts of the winery have been added, allowing the original house to be used as a welcome and tasting room. In 2004, a new 8 ha/ 20 acre plot was purchased for the planting of new vineyards. The family now tends to 30 ha/ 74 acres of vines, all located in Loreto Aprutino, between 250-300 mt/ 820-985 ft, about 25 km/ 16 miles from the Adriatic Sea. Their land is on the first slopes of the Tavo Creek and the land then soars above them towards the 3,000 mt/ 9,842 ft peak of the Gran Sasso d’Italia, the highest mountain of the Apennine range. The particular position of Torre Dei Beati gives the vineyards a warm wind coming up from the sea during the day, and cold air coming down from the mountain at night, especially during the last month of the maturation, when the Gran Sasso can be expected to be blanketed by snow. Torre Dei Beati has specialized in the Montepulciano grape but more recently they have started to plant Pecorino. These are perhaps the most interesting of the traditional white varieties of this region.

During harvest there are repeated pickings of the same plots only selecting the perfectly healthy and ripe bunches. This allows the other bunches to gain more maturity until they go back and pick again. The grapes are carefully selected and placed in 20 kg/ 44 lbs. cases and are immediately brought to the winery. There, the grapes are placed on a sorting table and only the best are selected. This process is applied to all the grapes Torre Dei Beati uses for their wines.

The careful selection of perfectly, healthy bunches of grapes, both in the vineyard and at the winery is done so the wines express the potential of the varieties cultivated. At Torre Dei Beati, the most advanced technology is dedicated to traditional winemaking while always remaining respectful to the authenticity of the organic grapes.

GIOCHEREMO CON I FIORI, ABRUZZO DOC

GRAPES: 100% Pecorino

PRODUCTION

Recently rediscovery in this territory, the Pecorino is a low-yield variety with great ecological value. A study has been undertaken to determine the variety’s capacity to adapt to the Abruzzo region. As part of this work, there have been several harvests undertaken at different times, and a range of differing fermentation and aging styles used to identify the best approach to bringing out the full potential and character of this grape. This bottle blends the best results reached. Aging: 100% stainless steel.

DESCRIPTION

Giocheremo con i Fiori (We will play with the flowers) is straw yellow with gold shades and provides a dense introduction to a full-body mouth. This wine has a fine and elegant nose of pear, broom, and gardenia, rounded by honey hints but vibrant with the typical herbs flavors of the variety such as sage, rosemary, and lavender. Smoothly entering the mouth, the zesty acidity and minerality tip the tasting balance giving a long, mouth-watering persistence. Giocheremo con I Fiori is a beautiful pairing for white fish, chicken, fried rice, roasted vegetables, and mild cheeses.

CERASUOLO ROSE’ D’ABRUZZO DOC

GRAPES: 100% Montepulciano

PRODUCTION

At the Torre Dei Beati estate, this is the first Montepulciano expression of vintage, the first indicator of its quality. The extremely careful selection in the vineyard and on the sorting table gives this wine good body and maturity, enriched by fresh flavours due to the low temperature of fermentation. This fine wine is proof of the flexibility of the Montepulciano variety. The vines are trained using the Abruzzo curtain method and the spurred cordon approach providing a yield of 70 hl per hectare/ 740 gal per acre. Vineyard: 22 ha/ 54 acres in size, with a South-East and North West orientation, an altitude of 300mt/ 984 ft above sea level. Planting Year: 1972, 1995. Soil: clay-limestone. Fermentation: undertaken in steel. Half of the wine is subject to direct, but very light pressure, on whole (ie not destemmed) bunches. The other half undergoes cold premaceration followed by bleeding out of the reds. Fermentation takes place at 15-16 ºC before the wine is aged in steel. Fermentation temperature: at 15-16 ºC/ 59-60 ºf. Ageing: Steel. Density: 1,600-2,000 vines per hectare/ 640-800 vines per acre.

DESCRIPTION

The typical bright, violet-shaded cherry colour and the visual perception of good density are followed by fresh and rich flavours of strawberry, pomegranate, and cherry, enriched by elegant flowers among which the rose emerges. The volume is full and well balanced between the smoothness. The alcohol and the good acidity and minerality contribute to a persistent and stimulating finish. Its particular character makes this wine very pleasant and flexible in pairing with a variety of dishes. These range from Italian antipasti through first courses, like pasta or legumes and grain-based soups, to main courses of white meat or sauced fish. That being said, this Montepulciano is perfect with seafood soup, crustaceans, mild cheese.

MONTEPULCIANO D’ ABRUZZO DOC

GRAPES: 100% Montepulciano

PRODUCTION

This was the first wine produced at Torre Dei Beati. It is an elegant and personal interpretation of the Montepulciano. Starting with repeated, very selective harvests in 55 of the same plots. This is followed by a further selection on the sorting table at the Loreto Aprutino vineyard where the grapes are grown. Thus, only the most appropriate fruit becomes part of this wine. The use of wood in the aging phase is important for helping the wine reach natural stability while keeping the fruity purity and enriching it with a light, well-balanced, and spicy complexity. Planted: 1972, 1995. Fermentation is undertaken in steel vats, with cold pre-maceration. There is a total maceration period of 20 days. Ageing takes place over 12 months. Half is done in 30 hl/ 800 gal Slavonian oak casks and half in small barrels first used for Pecorino white.

DESCRIPTION

This wine is a deep, violet-shaded ruby red. It has good density and an elegant nose with complex fruit, lightly enriched by spicy hints coming from the old vineyard and from the (not overwhelming) aging in wood. The pulpy body gives the wine a good smoothness, well balanced by the fine tannins, which in combination with the natural minerality and the well-measured acidity contribute to an elegant, long finish. Enjoy with pork, sausage, vegetable pasta, ricotta, and mozzarella.

Alc by vol.: 13 – 14% according to the vintage.
